Tye H. BernickNorfolk - Tye Hanbury Bernick, 47, beloved son of Patricia Bernick Riddle and the late Henry Clayton Bernick, Jr.; grandson of the late Mildred Hanbury Leake; and step-son of Charles Morton Riddle, III, departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 after an extended illness. Tye is survived by his sister, Susan Hunter Benante and her husband, Stephen; half-brothers, Henry Clayton Bernick, III, and his wife Holly, Craig Hamilton Bernick and his wife, Linda, and Stephen Andrew Bernick and his wife, Amy; his half-sister, Sarah Elizabeth Bernick; his stepmother, Gail Ansell Bernick; and several nieces and nephews. Tye was a graduate of Kempsville High School, received his BFA in Art from Old Dominion University, and his Master of Fine Arts from Mount Royal School of Painting, Maryland Institute College of Art. Tye was formerly an art teacher with the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, most recently at Princess Anne High School, where he inspired many students. During the summer months he could be seen shirtless and tan managing Pembroke Towers pool where he entertained the residents. A prolific and passionate artist, Tye's many accomplishments and accolades included work at The Smithsonian Institute of Art in Washington, D.C.; Virginia Beach Neptune Festival; The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va.; Stockley Gardens Art Festivals; multiple installations at Old Dominion University, Mount Royal School of Painting, Contemporary Art Center of Virginia Beach, and many other venues. Tye's enthusiasm for life was contagious. His personality, wit, and "Ty-Ger" smile will be forever remembered.
