The Way Back: The Norfolk Music Scene from the late 80s to early 2000s
Photos and memories courtesy of Lynn Knight
My name is Lynn Knight. I’m married to Charles Grant of Antic Hay and The Watts. I was born on Colley Ave. but grew up in Richmond and didn’t come back until my senior year in high school ('77-'78). I got a job at The Glass Baron where I met Andy LaBarge from Ant Man Bee and Matt Odietus of The Candy Snatchers, way before either of those bands existed. After high school, I moved away for another 10 years but always kept in touch with Andy. When I moved back he took me to see some bands at Cogans sometime in '88 or '89. That’s how I ended up hanging out in Norfolk and meeting most of the friends I have now and all these artist musicians types around here. Charlie (my hubby) worked at the Virginian Pilot Newspaper for 35 years but had a side job at The Colley Cantina where he worked with Matt Odietus and Sergio Ponce of The Candy Snatchers and where Larry May of the Snatchers was a regular along with a bunch of other band people. I missed most of the '80s in Norfolk but spent about 27 years living in Ghent and Colonial Place before moving to Chics Beach area of Virginia Beach 4 years ago. We don’t hang out like we used to even before COVID but sure wish we could see a band right now!
